English football has produced so many incredible clubs over the years, it can be hard to know where to start. We've scoured through the clubs to bring you our top 5 suggestions.

Notts County FC

Notts County FC are fierce rivals of Nottingham Forest and find themselves all the way down in the Vanarama National League with their almost 20,000 seater stadium. The good thing about this team is that they do have a pretty close chance of being promoted very soon. Notts County have had a fairly decent transfer budget in FM21 and FM22 which should continue into FM23. The club has average facilities which you'll want to improve as you progress through the leagues.

Bradford City

Bradford were in the Premier League in 2000-2001 but were then relegated. They've been bouncing up and down through the leagues and were promoted to League 1 in 2012-2013 season, went back down in the 2018-2019 season and now find themselves in Sky Bet League 2 again. Bradford City certainly give push back to clubs in Sky Bets League 2 and with the right signings they'll be promoted in no time providing they have a great manager. Their facilities aren't the best so will need some investment to get them to where they need to be.

Brentford

Brentford managed to pull off the seemingly impossible last season in being able to stay up comfortably after being the club to win the playoffs. It's a save that we would recommended sticking to the values that the club has, playing moneyball. They see value where others don't see it and try to bring in free transfers and players other clubs don't want, they also sign young talents for cheap. They have average facilities but are in a unique position as they don't have an under 18's team so in turn don't have the relevant facilities to go with it.

Psst! We got FM23 cheaper than Steam...

Sunderland AFC

Nicknamed 'The Black Cats', they haven't had the best of times lately. They were up and down early 2000s, relegated in the 2016-17 season going down to League One and have only just got back to the Sky Bet Championship. A string of managers with conflicting styles and ideas halted the clubs progress for a while. Sunderland needs to try to be the noisy neighbour to rival Newcastle as they can't compete on a financial level. The Black Cats have always prided themselves on their facilities so you won't need to touch these for a while, youth and junior side of things can be improved on as you progress.

Portsmouth

Portsmouth FC via VRTS ticket # 2019021510003653

Portsmouth are a historic club who used to play in the Premier League, the last time they played in it was in the 2009-2010 season. Since then they have rapidly declined and fallen off into League Two. Financial problems and point deductions stunted their progress but they are slowly climbing back again. The clubs facilities will need to be overhauled in some areas as they are lacking slightly. Once you've done this you should be able to fly up the leagues and get back to the promised land.
